"The act of composing as an extension of profound existential experiences in the sensuous field of interaction between the virtual and the real. How come no one conceived this before as an artistic expression of its own? Technology affords this opportunity, but it needed a warmblooded composer to explore the viable potentials available. Aanesen's onlinecomposer.org is a document of such a successful finding."
- Bjørn Howard Kruse (Professor in Composition, Composer and Artist)
"A work of art often has one rather narrow, but important way to be relevant. Aanesen, the creator of Onlinecomposer, however uses multifaceted tools and means to comment on and process universal and vital themes, though always relevant - on many surfaces simultaneously. His art balances on the not always straight paths of life and manages to enlarge the lonesome and personal to something that is large and important for all of us."
- Malin Kjelsrud (Librettist, Writer and Multi-artist)
"Aanesen uses elements that are equally weighted: Music, soundscape, text, picture and video. Today we might call it mixed media. Back in 1827 when the German philosopher Trahndorff coined the German word “Gesamtkunstwerk“, it meant the different arts combined in one work as opera. The concept was later used by Wagner in 1849. It isn’t known if he knew about Trahndorff. Aanesen isn’t afraid sharing his own personal experiences with the audience. His focus on homosexuality is in my opinion about universal love, and not the ongoing identity war as such. The boarders between reality and fiction was erased introducing the SMS-chat with non-existing Aron Tennenze i season 3. I hope Online Composer is going to develop that angle further. The onlinecomposer site contains furthermore chats with friends and colleagues on a broad types of topics. The music is melodic art-pop combined — Aanesen has a great voice — with the experience from post-Darmstadt academism, but based on state of the art production way beyond the ruling Lo-Fi post-conceptualism."
- Dagfinn Koch (Composer)
"onlinecomposer is at terms with its own time. Creation in presence, communication and enlightenment through social media are key words as descriptors from and out of our modern society. In a mix between performance, philosophy, social awareness and art, onlinecomposer as concept meets the needs of modernity as we know it. The concept can be viewed as a dynamic, pulsating blog where the end product, the music itself, is the very goal of the process. Alternatively, the process can be viewed as the goal itself, leaving the music as a mere byproduct. The composer in solitude, or the band as a community of composers, are all left behind in Aanesen’s extending project. The art lies within and between every post and every shared status. If this is not the future, it sure is the now. Our now."
- Geir F. Stavsøien (Composer)
"onlinecomposer.org is a long-running, multi-dimensional artistic project initiated in 2017. Created by Norwegian composer Aanesen, the platform blends music, visual art, and narrative storytelling to explore themes such as identity, mental health, and the complexities of love – particularly from a queer perspective.
The project is structured into a series of seasons, each centered around a distinct theme and expressed through a combination of original compositions, short videos, text-based dialogues, and visual artwork. While deeply personal, the work balances introspection with universal concepts, inviting viewers to reflect on issues like societal expectations, inner conflict, and the pursuit of self-acceptance.
Central to the project is the recurring figure of Aron, a semi-fictional character who embodies the creator's evolving understanding of love and connection. Through Aron, onlinecomposer.org delves into existential questions about identity, memory, and the role of imagination in shaping reality.
Highlights include the integration of sub-algorithms – musical fragments layered with broader themes – and the interplay between fictional narratives and autobiographical elements. Notable seasons such as "Mental Health," "14-Year-Old," and "Aron's Last Year" juxtapose vulnerability with bold artistic experimentation.
Live documentation of the creative process further enhances the interactive nature of the project, providing transparency into the artistic journey. The use of modern and classical references, alongside experimental soundscapes and digital aesthetics, positions onlinecomposer.org at the intersection of contemporary art and deeply personal storytelling.
Despite its focus on niche themes, the project transcends its specific context to address broader human emotions, making it accessible to a wide audience. onlinecomposer.org is not merely a collection of artistic works but an ongoing reflection on life, identity, and the enduring power of creative expression."
